Booked an individual climbing session for my grandson aged 14 ( with his grandfather) with Steffan. It was great for his self confidence and he will definitely continue with this activity. We would come back to Wales specifically for Steffan.
Excellent instruction and tuition from Steffan for four ‘apprehensive’ climbers. Steffan was very patient and calming showing us the ‘ropes’. Would definitely recommend.
We had a great full day of activities with Hawk Adventure and had Steve as our guide. We started in the morning with rock climbing and abseiling which was a great fun, and Steve made us feel at ease with his expertise.
Walking Routes in South Wales
Natural World
Explore the landscape through the lens of nature. These walks often include insights into geology, local wildlife, ecology, and the hidden stories of the land itself.
- Natural Wonders (Brecon Beacons) – Wind through a stunning gorge dotted with cave entrances and cascading waterfalls where we also recommend looking at our caving and gorge walking adventures to explore these elements closer. This route brings geology, geography and natural history to life.
- Dark Skies Walk – Heading out after the sun goes down, this walk makes the most of the Brecon Beacons Dark Sky Reserve, one of the best places in the UK to view the night sky. On a good night, the whole of the Milky Way can be seen streaking across the sky.
History & Heritage
Take a stroll back in time and see hundreds (even thousands) of years of human history scattered across the Welsh landscape. Join your guide and follow in the footsteps of Neolithic man hunting and living in caves, invading armies laying siege to castles, or miners fuelling the industrial revolution.
- Carreg Cennen, Carmarthenshire – Approach one of the most dramatically positioned castles in Wales from the edge of the mountains, through ancient fields and woodland. This circular walk includes hidden rivers, tales of daring, and even a cave beneath the castle to explore.
- Forgotten Industry, Brecon Beacons – Following the path of the beautiful River Mellte, we’ll take you back to a time when Wales powered the British Empire. Coal, gunpowder, furnaces and copper, it’s all here in the valleys.
- Crashed Bomber, Swansea – Hidden in the craggy ground above the Swansea Valley lie the remains of a WWII Wellington bomber. Its Canadian crew perished in bad weather, and a memorial now stands among the wreckage. A great walk for those interested in both history and rugged terrain.
Myth & Legend
Walk in the footsteps of folklore. These stories blend myth and history, and our guides will bring each tale vividly to life.
- Lady of the Lake – Llyn y Fan Fawr – A beautiful glacial lake in the stunning Carmarthen Fans, located in the quiet west of the Brecon Beacons. Legend tells of a mysterious lady who changed the course of local life forever. This is a longer walk, so a good level of fitness is recommended.
Peak Adventures
Reach the heights of South Wales on one of our summit walks, including the highest points in southern Britain.
- Pen y Fan & Beyond – Ascend one of the Brecon Beacons’ iconic peaks. These routes are more physically demanding, but your guide will pace the walk to suit your group, with rest stops, stories, and stunning views along the way (weather permitting!).
