Is Gorge Walking Safe?
Gorge walking is guaranteed to be an adrenaline thrill, with waterfalls to scramble beneath, streams to swim through, and natural pools to take a dip. It’s an adventurous way to get up close and personal with all the natural beauty that South Wales has to offer. As such, beginners may be nervous about the safety of gorge walking and apprehensive about having a go.

It’s important to note that there are different levels of difficulty when gorge walking. The route could involve straightforward challenges, such as simple rock hops for less-confident participants, or, for those looking for more of a thrill, technical climbs and abseils can be incorporated into the day.
Whatever your ability or thrill level, however, the biggest risk with this activity is choosing to have a go yourself without a professional. It’s therefore crucial that you use an accredited gorge walking provider to guide you across narrow ledges and direct you across known routes.
At Hawk Adventures, we have more than 30 years of experience running safe gorge walking sessions. As such, we’re able to tailor your route to your ability and confidence level, allowing you to decide whether to plan a wet-and-wild adventure or a more leisurely outing.
What Makes Gorge Walking Safe When Guided by Hawk Adventures?
Choosing an accredited provider is the first step to ensuring safety when gorge walking. However, if you’re nervous or a complete novice, it’s also important to consider whether your provider offers bespoke routes based on your ability.

At Hawk Adventures, our ratios allow for close supervision (especially useful for nervous beginners), and we can also tailor our route around the Brecon Beacons based on the group’s ability. We always provide pre-session safety briefings to ensure you are fully prepared for the exciting adventure ahead!
The Real Risks and How We Manage Them
Part of the thrill of gorge walking is that there is a combination of steep drops, shallow ledges, and deep waters. All of which can really get your heart pumping!
However, there is, of course, a very real risk of slipping on wet rocks and uneven ground, or of being swept away in fast water. You must never go gorge walking alone, and even more importantly, you and your group should choose an accredited provider to mitigate these risks.

At Hawk Adventures, we provide you with all necessary gorge walking equipment (including buoyancy aids, wellies, and wetsuits, should you choose to wear one!) The specialist boots we provide also ensure a grip on the slippery surfaces you’ll be clambering across. Our instructors will also be carrying a range of emergency equipment, are trained in first aid, and have risk-assessed the routes ahead of time.
Who Is Gorge Walking Suitable For?
You may be surprised to learn that gorge walking is suitable for young people as well as adults! This is because we tailor our routes at Hawk Adventures based on confidence, swimming ability, and fitness levels.
A highly fit and confident group of adults may choose a full-day gorge walk, whereas a youth group may require a more leisurely half-day route.
We can cater to families, schools, youth groups, corporate teams, groups of friends celebrating, or you can sign up as an individual or couple.

What Our Instructors Do to Keep You Safe Throughout the Activity
The key component to ensuring your safety during gorge walking is constant supervision. You will never be left to navigate a stretch by yourself, and we’re always on hand to help on the tricky sections!
We also monitor weather and water conditions to ensure the route we choose is safe before we start and adjust as necessary.
Tips for Staying Safe as a Participant
The main way to stay safe on the day is to listen to instructions and follow guidance from the instructors.
You’ll also need to use a bit of common sense (such as moving slowly on slippery surfaces – it isn’t a race!) and stay with the group. Wearing the right layers will also keep you warm during the wetter parts of the trail.
