Adventure Ideas to Make the Most of the Autumn Outdoors
If you’ve been waiting for the right time to get outdoors, autumn is it. The crowds have gone, the air’s fresh, and the rivers, caves, and cliffs are at their most exciting.
It’s the season when South Wales really comes alive, perfect for those who’d rather spend a weekend exploring than staying indoors. Whether you’re looking for a challenge with friends, something different to do as a couple, or a weekend escape before winter sets in, there’s plenty to do. From gorge walking and canyoning to rock climbing and caving, autumn offers the right mix of conditions for each.
Gorge Walking: Active and Accessible
Gorge walking is one of the most popular autumn adventure activities we offer. It’s a great way to move, explore, and spend a few hours in the fresh air. You’ll walk, climb and scramble through a natural gorge, following the water, stepping through pools, and working together as a group.
It’s a full-body experience that feels different every time you do it. We provide all the safety kit and equipment, you just need to bring warm layers, a towel and an old pair of trainers. It’s suitable for beginners and a brilliant choice for groups who want something physical but achievable.

Canyoning: For Those Who Want a Bit More
If you’re ready to take things up a notch, canyoning is the next step. It’s faster-paced than gorge walking, with more slides, jumps, and swims. The routes we use around the Brecon Beacons are some of the best in the country, shaped by centuries of flowing water.
Our instructors know every part of the terrain, and each trip is tailored to the group’s ability and confidence. It’s a proper outdoor adventure in Wales, real landscapes, real challenge, and plenty of laughter in between.

Rock Climbing: Simple, Rewarding and Real
Climbing is one of the most honest ways to experience the outdoors. It doesn’t matter how high you go, what counts is working with the rock and finding your rhythm. Autumn conditions are ideal, cool air, solid grip, and stunning views from the top.
Our rock-climbing adventures are open to both complete beginners and more experienced climbers. You’ll learn in your own space, supported by instructors who focus on safety and steady progress rather than pressure. Most sessions take place on natural rock in the Neath Valley or near the coast, where the scenery makes the effort worthwhile.

Caving: The Hidden Side of Wales
When the weather turns or you want something completely different, head underground. Caving in Wales reveals a side of the landscape most people never see. You’ll move through passages, explore wide caverns, and see natural formations that have taken thousands of years to form.
Every session is guided by experienced cavers who know these systems inside out. Routes are chosen to suit your group’s level, from open chambers, perfect for beginners, to more technical sections for those with experience. It’s a calm, focused kind of adventure that stays with you long after you surface.

What to Know Before You Go
Autumn can be unpredictable, but that’s part of its charm. Dress in layers so you can adjust as you go. Bring waterproofs, good footwear, and a change of clothes if your activity involves water. Hawk Adventures supplies all technical kit, from helmets and harnesses to wetsuits and ropes so that you can focus on the experience itself.
Sessions usually last between three and five hours, depending on the activity and the group. We’ll brief you before you start, cover safety clearly, and make sure everyone’s comfortable before heading out.
