Hill Skills

This courses is a practical introduction to the skills required to get started in hill walking. The course aims to equip participants with the basic knowledge and essential safety skills required to start pursuing their own participation in hill walking as a leisure time activity.

Co-ordinated by Mountain Training through their Hill and Mountain Skills courses, Hawk Adventures are please to offer you training of a national standard.

The Hill Skills course is aimed at the beginner hill walker and ideal for those interested in developing a practical understanding of how to plan walks, become familiar with the use of a map, learn about the equipment required and also gain an understanding of the effects of weather, how to deal with emergencies and gain a valuable understanding of the upland environment. This course utilises countryside and moorland areas in South Wales, the skills will learnt here will be transferable to many popular walking areas of the UK and Ireland.

Location: Brecon Beacons, South Wales

Duration: 2 Days

Prerequisites: No previous experience needed. Participants must be aged over 14. You must register with Moutain Training before you can book on the course (£20 or £17 for under 18s). Register Now.

Course Content: The course includes all aspects of the MT syllabus including:

  • Planning
  • Walking skills
  • Clothing and equipment
  • Weather
  • Navigation in the hills
  • Environmental knowledge
  • Hazards and emergency procedures


Cost: The cost for the course is £120 per person.

What You Will Need: Further details sent on booking. You can borrow equipment from us if you do not yet have your own.

What You Will Receive: As well as two days of training for expert instructors, both on and off the hill, you will receive a copy of the "Safety on Mountains" course hand book, training notes and future advice from both us at Hawk Adventures and from Mountain Training and access to an online digital logbook.
